Listen, Watch, Read: December 20, 2015

As it was the holiday season, I was listening to Christmas music. While I like a good “Jingle Bell Rock,” or The Beach Boy’s “Little Saint Nick,” I’ve found this year I’ve been more interested in Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. I totally dig it, the famous numbers and the more obscure ones. I also have a friend who released a Christmas-themed compilation on Christmas: Scarves’ SUPER EXTRA SUPER CHRISTMAS. It’s a mix of a bunch of different flavors. There’s more electronic stuff, more folksy stuff, more straight rock. I’m not sure all the details about this release, but here’s the bandcamp so you can (AND SHOULD!) check it out for yourself!

Red Cup, Blue Cup, Artisanal Cup, Weird Cup

I have a bit of paranoia such that being among large crowds makes me anxious. I have this irrational sense that people are looking at me and judging me.

I was watching Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens in a theatre here in Taiwan, and there were many instances were I laughed while the rest of the packed theatre remained silent. This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced this watching a movie here. With Pitch Perfect 2, I was laughing my a** off pretty much the whole movie whereas the theatre remained relatively silent during all bud the physical comedy scenes. I think at one point, the woman in front of me turned around and gave me a look, like: shut up, we’re watching a movie!

I definitely think too much. I always have. But I’ve been trying to tone it down, rid myself of the useless embarrassment of past events and the fear of future interactions with other humans. This self-workshopping requires constant vigilance. I fail often.

Serial, Season 2. Like the rest of the world, I was captivate by Serial’s first season investigation of the murder of Hae Min Lee and trial of Adnan Syed. So I planned to tune in to season 2. I’m less interested in the story of Bowe Bergdahl; after one episode of season 1, I was hooked on each new episode, whereas so far with season 2, I’m like: “I’ll listen when I feel like it.” HOWEVER, I place trust in the producers of Serial and will let Sarah Koenig’s voice lead my ears wherever she desires they go.

I didn’t really listen to this a lot last week, but I plan to listen to it in the future. The Coolies, a band from New Zealand, released their latest album: Kaka. (When looking for their tumblr, I learned that the word coolies is actually a racial slur. THE MORE YOU KNOW! I’m assuming they’re trying to reclaim the word as I think they are not white New Zealanders, but I also don’t know the racial dynamics of New Zealand. More of a reason to visit sometime soon!) I first heard them when listening to Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio and really dug their sound. I thought maybe they were another band that put out stuff for a few years, then slowly became no more, but their most recent release gives me hope that sometimes under-the-radar bands can come back a few years later. Anyway, I haven’t listened to it that much because my computer is in the shop and so I am computer-less at home, but I definitely think it’s a good listen for those into rougher, sludgier, subgarage post-punk.
